Patriotic Jell-O Shots

Recipe by Shannon

These patriotic Jell-O shots have blue, creamy white, and red layers with whipped cream and sprinkles. Make them with vodka for adults or swap in cold water for a nonalcoholic party cup.

  • Total Time3 hours 25 minutes
  • Yield24 shots 1x
  • DietGluten-Free

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 small 3 ounce box berry blue gelatin
  • 1 small 3 ounce box red gelatin, such as cherry or strawberry
  • 1 envelope unflavored gelatin
  • 7 ounces sweetened condensed milk, about half of a 14 ounce can
  • 3 1/2 cups water, divided
  • 1 1/2 cups vodka, or 1 1/2 cups cold water for nonalcoholic shots
  • 1 1/2 cups whipped cream or whipped topping
  • 1/2 cup red, white, and blue sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Arrange 24 small 2-ounce cups on a rimmed tray.
  2. Stir the blue gelatin with 1 cup boiling water until dissolved.
  3. Stir in 1/2 cup cold water and 1/2 cup vodka, or use 1 cup cold water for a nonalcoholic layer.
  4. Pour the blue mixture into the cups until one-third full and chill until firm.
  5. Sprinkle the unflavored gelatin over 1/4 cup cold water and let it sit for 1 minute.
  6. Stir in 1/4 cup boiling water until the gelatin dissolves.
  7. Mix in the sweetened condensed milk and 1/2 cup vodka, or 1/2 cup cold water for nonalcoholic shots.
  8. Cool the white mixture, pour it over the blue layer until the cups are two-thirds full, and chill until firm.
  9. Stir the red gelatin with 1 cup boiling water until dissolved.
  10. Stir in 1/2 cup cold water and 1/2 cup vodka, or use 1 cup cold water for a nonalcoholic layer.
  11. Cool the red mixture, pour it over the white layer, and chill until firm.
  12. Top with whipped cream and sprinkles right before serving.

Notes

Let each layer set fully before adding the next one, and let each new gelatin mixture cool before pouring it into the cups. If the next layer is warm, it can soften the layer underneath and blur the red, white, and blue stripes.

For the cleanest party prep, keep the cups on a tray the whole time so they move in and out of the fridge without tilting. Add whipped cream and sprinkles only right before serving, since the topping looks best fresh and the sprinkles can bleed color if they sit too long.
