Soft Sourdough Dinner Rolls

Warm dinner rolls can fix a mood faster than most things, honestly.

These come out glossy on top, soft in the middle, and sturdy enough to hold a swipe of butter without falling apart in your hands.

The dough stays simple, then it gets shaped into little rounds that bake up with that shiny pull-apart look people always notice first.

They work for soup nights, holiday spreads, and roast dinners where the bread basket needs to earn its space.

Put these on the table with July 4th BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Slaw or 4th of July Classic Potato Salad and the basket will empty fast.

That soft center really does all the talking here.

Ingredients for sourdough dinner rolls

How To Make Sourdough Dinner Rolls

1. Start with the milk and starter.

Pour the warm milk into a bowl and stir in the sourdough starter until it loosens up and blends through.

2. Add the honey and melted butter.

Stir in the honey and melted butter so the wet base looks smooth and lightly creamy.

3. Mix in the flour and salt.

Add the flour and salt, then mix until the dough looks rough and starts pulling together into one mass.

4. Work it into a dough.

Keep mixing and kneading until the dough looks smoother and more elastic instead of sticky and shaggy.

5. Knead until smooth.

Once the dough turns soft and even, cover it and let it rise until it looks puffed and airy.

6. Shape the rolls in the pan.

Divide the dough into six pieces, roll each one into a ball, and place them snugly into a pan.

7. Bake until golden.

Let the rolls rise again until they look fuller, then bake at 375 F for 18 to 22 minutes until the tops are nicely browned.

8. Brush with butter.

As soon as the rolls come out, brush the tops with melted butter so they get that shiny finish and extra-soft feel.

What to Watch For While They Bake

The tops should turn deep golden while the sides stay soft where the rolls bake close together.

A good batch looks lightly domed and feels feather light when you lift one.

That final butter brush matters too, because it keeps the tops tender instead of papery.

What to Serve Beside Them

These are real dinner-table rolls, so they make sense with soups, roast meats, salads, or even sliced ham.

They are also good split and filled, which means leftovers can turn into tiny sandwiches without much effort.

If the meal needs something warm and soft in the middle of the table, these rolls cover that job very well.

Saving a Few for Later

Keep the rolls covered at room temperature for a day or two so they stay soft.

For longer storage, freeze them once cool and warm them back up before serving.

A little butter on top after reheating wakes them right back up.

Roll Questions

Do these taste very sour? They have a light sourdough note, but the milk, honey, and butter keep the flavor gentle.

Can I shape more than six rolls? Yes, though the image flow here shows six larger rolls baked close together in one pan.

Why brush the tops after baking? That step keeps the tops soft and gives the rolls their glossy finish.

Can I split them for sandwiches? Yes, and the soft crumb makes them very easy to fill without crumbling apart.
